WordPad stopped running - Psion NBP

I got out of using my Psion a while back because of a problem after trying to reboot it into Linux (with I expect, were somewhat faulty Linux boot files, hence, my quest to get the good ones, please see this thread in case you could help?)

How to Install Linux on a 128MB CE.NET 4.2 Psion NetBook Pro

http://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=15975#M152320

Back to this thread:
After trying to boot the Psion from CF, it would not reboot into Windows. Turns out, it was just very slow, it did boot back to CE eventually, but, now WordPad does not run.
The icon is there, but nothing loads. I was using the Psion a lot for taking notes so this is a major problem!
What can be done to repair WordPad?

This is a finger-friendly calendar app for the Pocket PC that turns out to be another Pocket PC app that looks cooler on the big H/PC screen. It's another nice creation by the geniuses over at xda-developers.com. It's written for CE 4.2 .net or higher, and requires the following DLLs: aygshell.dll, cellcore.dll, and imgdecmp.dll. Here's a shot of it on my Fujitsu Stylistic CT2020:

Ambicom WL54-CF wifi card help needed

$

Well I decided to buy an Ambicom WL54-CF...mainly cause I always wanted to try one with my 900C and it was only $3 on eBay.

I've tried 3 different CE.NET 4.2 drivers, and they all work. I tried the Planex, the I/O data, and the Ambicom drivers.

When I say they work, what I mean is that the CF card lights up like it should and I don't get any errors.

However, and here is the caveat....I have no way to configure the silly thing. I mean there is no Microsoft Zero Configuration Tool for CE.NET...is there?

And I don't want to have to go in to the registry to manually set parameter anytime I need to enter data...and since WPA/WEP keys are normally encrypted in the registry, I'm not sure how I would do that anyways.

I know all you Sig3 people have a wonderful time using these 802.11G CF wifi cards...so why can't I use it on my 900C...I'm just pouting right now.

Anyone have any insight as to what I need to do? (And please don't talk to my wife to find out that answer....)

Well, I may be regressing, but I just got one in the mail today. What a nifty little machine. I played with it a while. Battery is shot in the thing so right now I have it in a zillion pieces spread across the table.

Going to go to Radio Shack tomorrow and see if I can find a 7.4V LION cell for it that will fit in the battery area. Can't exceed 130mm x 68mm x 10mm in size...but I bet I can find some battery from a remote controlled car that will fit in there or something.

Then it will be time to flash the thing to CE.NET 4.2.

More info to follow as I discover it...

This is a really cool app for browsing and/or controlling your mobile device from your desktop PC. You can connect directly through WiFi or through ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center. It works on Windows CE 4.2 .net and later devices. Details are here:

http://mymobiler.com/mm/?p=72

I tested it on one of my Fourier Nova 5000s using WiFi connection between the two computers' IP addresses, and it works nicely. Screenshots are below. I pulled up the Start Menu and opened Total Commander and KelBran Pocket Calendar using the touchpad controls on my PC. :D

Help wanted with Bootloader reinstallation on SIMPAD SL4,

hello,
I've a SIMPAD SL4 on which I wan to to flash it clean with the bootloader & the WinCE4.1 image following the procedure found here on the supportpages but I encounter after 2 days trying still the same errors.

The problems are as follows :
- if I connect (serial) with hyperterminal I've to set the speed to 115200baud instead of 38400 or I'll get "chinese" on the PC screen
... strange & not as the procedure stated. With 115200baud the output on the PC screen is perfect readable.
- if I run serload with the bootloader or even with the WinCE image the screen is again full of so called chinese signs. So I think that also here the speed is wrong but I can't force serload to use another speed ... or can I ?

what am I doing wrong ?
its on a Windows XP Pro PC (an old pentium 4) but I've tried on 4 other PC's with the latest Intel CPUs & W7 etc all the same result.
the serial cable is the original serial cable out of the box.

the reason I want to flash it back to the factory settings with CE becaus my son has put Linux on it a few years ago.

sincerely,
Marc

seeking inet utils 'netstat', 'route', etc

Greetings:

Links are dead for previous references on this site to command-line (or otherwise) versions of 'netstat', 'route' and other canonical inet utils for CE 4.2 (pocket pc 2003, wm2003); I have the ppc2002 stuff from the now defunct www.symbolictools.de site and they do work but only by opening a new (text mode) window which closes too quickly after command execution to read the results (they are invoked in a text-mode window provided by 'cmd.exe' but open yet another window). Not having the MS tools to build these (nor the wince compatible sources) I would appreciate any help in getting them. I do have a working cegcc toolchain and could build what I need but don't relish porting *nix versions to this platform if not necessary.

Thanks,

Michael

ip routing between bluetooth PAN and WiFi

$

So far I have been unable to find any online answers to whether CE 4.2 (PPC 2003, WM2003) will route IP between the bluetooth PAN interface and another interface (WiFi, ethernet) on the same machine; On a 'host' PPC with both interfaces, I have enabled IP routing (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Tcpip\Parms\IPEnableRouter=1), assigned the PAN adapter a static IP addr on a different network, verified connectivity with a 'client' PAN device on that second network, but am not able to route packets between the two interfaces on the 'host' (e.g. traffic to or from the PAN 'client' is not routed).

By default, the O/S assigns 'link local' addresses to the PAN adapter, but they can be changed to routeable addresses in the control panel; is this a clue that routing is disabled for the PAN interface?

All insights appreciated.

MP900 Jlime and more

Hey all, I have owned an NEC of one type or another for the past 8 or 10 years now, I am familiar and fond of these little demons. I own an mp900 now with the 4.2 updated rom, and I am waiting on another CF card from ebay so I can mess around with jlime and I'm probably too excited. I do have some questions as far as multi-booting, would it slow my system down at all? Would I have re flash the system every time I do a hard reset? I've seen some literature and I am almost certain I will be looking for more in the future, feel free to share your experience. The second question I have is, can I successfully send packets with the serial cable for testing other devices like a host pc, or a switch's connection for educational purposes or even a work application on CE or Jlime. I remember doing this in a Cisco vocational class in high school but I really don't remember what program was used and how it was done. It was a function I had never seen before in computing and I thought it was amazing the first time, and it's the little things that really keep people going, especially in that particular field.

Thank you.

First step of booting Linux on Sigmarion 3

Hi guys, I'm trying BOCHS on my Sigmarion 3 which C:Amie introduced to me. More about BOCHS here

So far, I'm able to make BOCHS boot the BIOS, but can't boot the DSL image file which is about 50MB. The DSL iso image file is located on my CF card.

I've attached a photo of the progress so far.

I'm attaching the BOCHSRC as well below.
I know it's something to do with cyl, heads and spt.

Anybody who's good with setting files, please help!

Update: I think the DSL eats too much memory for BOCHS on this machine since it's setup with 4MB of RAM in the settings.

New HPC owner with a couple of questions

$

Hello all,

I have been interested in HPCs since I first heard of them a couple of years ago, and I've been reading reviews and other info on this great site off-and-on for about as long. The price that perfect-working units go for always prohibited me from owning one, but that changed a couple of weeks ago when I finally got a *supposedly* perfect NEC MobilePro 900C for $40 shipped on eBay. Unfortunately, the seller failed to mention, and their blurry pitch-black photos failed to show, that someone painted the outside of the unit a very ugly (and sticky) grey, the stylus isn't original, and the USB port cover is missing. However, it works perfect, the inside of the unit is immaculate, the seller included a Linksys WPC11 wireless card, and even the battery is still good, so I'm happy anyway. :)

I've used the unit quite a bit since I've got it, and I really love it. The seller did include a CD full of software, so I've been having fun going through that and seeing what works (much of it is Pocket PC or Windows Mobile software). I also have a 4 GB MicroDrive on the way (yeah, yeah, I know, but at $6 it was the cheapest CompactFlash drive I could find), so I'll be able to update the bootloader and firmware when that comes. I may try cmonex's ROM, as well.

Anyhow, as a new HPC user I have a few general questions. First of all, is it normal for these to freeze up a lot? I find that whenever I use it, I have to poke the reset button at least once or twice a day. Most of the freeze-ups happen while I'm browsing files on my USB flash drive, so perhaps it's just my cheap drive? Also, once in a while when I soft-reset it, it ends up acting like a hard-reset, so I've learned to keep a backup using ActiveSync.

Second, what's the best overall web browser to use with CE.net 4.2? I haven't done much browsing yet, but so far on IE 6 I've only been successful in loading this site, cmonex's site, and the mobile version of Facebook. I couldn't even get Google to load, and I've never found a web browser that couldn't load Google!

Third, is there any way of putting battery and sound applets beside the clock, like in desktop Windows? I hate having to go to the Control Panel to check out those things.

My apologies if these questions have already been answered. I've done some searching on here and I've googled, but I haven't come across any answers yet. Anyhow, I really love this thing, and I'm happy to finally have an HPC to tinker around with, and maybe even get some use out of. :)

Thanks,
Trent

SIMPad stuck in calibration loop

$

I have a Siemens SIMPad SL4 with WinCE 4.1 on it, and nothing else much really. The SIMPad is only used as a portable picture viewer for photos on a CF card, but I figured it could make a nice desktop photo frame, maybe even installing Linux on it.

Unfortunately, it seems that the pad has decided it will not leave the calibration screen, no matter what I try. I have tried the reset hole in the back, but it just reboots and enters the calibration screen, never to leave it again.

Does anyone know what I can do about this?

This has been mentioned in passing in a couple of old threads:

http://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=8725&posts=57&highlight=FloatMe&highlightmode=1#M92070

- but it's a pretty cool little utility created by one of the geniuses over at xda-developers.com:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282913

It can make any window (even the desktop, so be careful with it) into a movable, resizable window. It's written for Windows Mobile 2003 devices, but it works almost flawlessly on CE 4.2 .net and higher devices. (The only issue is that sometimes the taskbar buttons for a window don't go away after closing the window.) It'll even work fine all the way down to H/PC Pro (ARM only of course) by hexediting the OS version on the file. :)

Resizing the window is done the normal Windows way, by moving the right-hand and/or bottom borders with the stylus or mouse. (Easy to do with the mouse; harder with the stylus, as it usually requires several tries to find the exact spot to touch the screen. :pinch: ) If the window to be resized doesn't have a title bar, running FloatMe.exe a second time creates one. :D

Here's a screenshot from my Fujitsu Stylistic CT2020:

ROM cooking PNA Plenio VXA-3000/VXA-2100

$

Hi All,

I have been working on building a new ROM for the Plenio VXA-2100 GPS running WINCE 4.2

** special thanks to hpcmonex for her site and tutorial.

I have successfully created one minor tweak to the registry file and successfully uploaded the image once, but I haven't been able to add files or do major changes to the ROM.

I am looking for some help with adding softkb.dll and changing the registry to activate the SIP keyboard.

Here is the background on the unit and the steps that I have taken so far.

The ROM tools (bksamsung/bkondisk) designed to dump NAND ROM's do not work on the Plenio units. You can dump the kernal (nk.exe) from the 8Meg nor flash using Grabit.

Luckily Plenio has a nk.bin file on their support site that you can use.

Download the latest nk.bin from

http://www.dvssales.com/support/Downloads_files/NK.bin

Note that this ROM is for VXA-3000 but if you want to load it into the VXA-2100 then rename it to NK2100_.bin. (I have done this on my VXA-2100 with no issues, but the next time you upgrade the ROM you will need to name the file nk.bin since you now have the VXA-3000 ROM loaded)
My understanding is the the 3000 and 2100 are identical except the GPS antenna on the 2100 is detachable.

The ROM Dumping tools will not work on the downloaded file without removing some leading bytes.

I opened the nk.bin file with a HEX editor and removed everything before BOOOFF (28 bytes I think) and save the file under a new name, I used nk_edited.bin.
(thanks to andrewnprice on ppcwarez for this tip!)

The output of viewbin now looks like this.

ViewBin... nk_edited.bin
Image Start = 0x8C200000, length = 0x010F2050
Start address = 0x8C201000
Checking record #83 for potential TOC (ROMOFFSET = 0x00000000)
Found pTOC = 0x8d2f0544
ROMOFFSET = 0x00000000
Done.

Using the following I converted the file to RAW format

cvrtbin nk_edited.bin -r -a 8c200000 -w 32 -l 010f2050 nk_edited.bin

Then finally - Dumped the files contained in the ROM.

dumprom -d c:\tmp\vxa-3000 nk_edited.nb0

I now now have all of the files in the ROM extracted.

Using the perl scripts from hpcmonex's site I converted the default.fdf to default.reg and made a minor change to some text in one of the time zones.

I checked to make sure that the modified default.fdf file was the same size as the original and I then used binmod to put the default.fdf back into the bin file.

Loaded up the nk.bin file using the OS update tool in the Plenio and all was good.

binmod -i nk_edited.bin -r default.fdf
BinMod V1.0 built Apr 5 2006 11:32:47

Checking record #83 for potential TOC (ROMOFFSET = 0x00000000)
Found pTOC = 0x8d2f0544

Done!

My challenge now is that I can not make any other changes to default.fdf and get the nk.bin to load on the GPS.

I have also tried the following tools to make changes, but I get the same results.

Adding default.fdf with dumpromx

dumpromx -v -f default.fdf -a default.fdf nk_edited.nb0
img 00000000 : hdr=8d2f0544 base=8c200000 commandlineoffset=8c200000

ERROR: could not find pointer for ofs 00000000
Successful file default.fdf inserting
default.fdf.nb saved successfully

xipbin edited.nb0 0 edited.bin 0
Hooray, now all we need is some patience!
Input: Offset 0x00000000 in EDITED.NB0
Output: Offset 0x00000000 in EDITED.BIN
(0x is okay here because I say so)
....................................................................

My apologies: operation completed successfully. Maybe I can do worse next time!

Can anyone point me in the right direction to be able to make more substantial changes to default.fdf and successfully get them into a working nk.bin file? I suspect that I have an incorrect offset or checksum issue that I don't have enough experience to figure out.

Any help appreciated.

mini USB 1.1 master port on Netbook Pro

$

First, I need a definition or a distinction between a master port and a host port, if any at all.

I'm on a Psion Teklogix Netbook Pro running Windows CE.NET 4.20. I'm trying to shed some weight and to go back to just having a handy little word processor. So I have a full registered copy of SoftMaker office but to use it again I need to have a working flash drive. I don't have an SD card, CF card, or even a PCMCIA card to run SoftMaker, but I do have a mini USB 1.1 master port on the Netbook Pro. The problem is that I just can't get the Netbook Pro to recognize any of the 3 USB flash drives I've plugged into it (via a mini USB to female USB cable). I tried 2 sandisks, a 1 gig and an 8 gig, and a 4 gig Kingston. Are Kingston and Sandisk usb flash drives 1.1 compatible?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
